Sustainability
Goal
The Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) is steering the implementation of a sustainable long-term climate action plan. Three overarching targets guide SGI’s work - emissions reduction, afforestation and land regeneration, and land and sea protection. Since the launch of SGI in 2021, 85+ initiatives have been activated and progress continues every day.
Goal 1: Reducing Emissions
A mission to accelerate Saudi Arabia’s green energy transition and mitigate the impacts of climate change, paving the way to net zero emissions by 2060. The Kingdom is adopting a multidimensional approach to emission reduction and has committed to 50% of its power generated from renewable sources by 2030. It is investing in new energy sources, improving energy efficiency, and developing a carbon capture and storage program to build a sustainable future for all.
Goal 2: Greening Saudi
A commitment to rehabilitate over 74 million hectares of land and restore Saudi Arabia’s natural greenery by growing 10 billion trees. This whole-of-society effort will aid in increasing vegetation cover and help combat desertification through carefully planned afforestation initiatives across the Kingdom.
Goal 3: Protecting Land and Sea
Saudi Arabia has committed to protecting 30% of its terrestrial and marine area by 2030. Working with internationally leading biodiversity protection organizations such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), this ambitious target will ensure that abundant wildlife and pristine landscapes will continue to define the Kingdom's natural ecosystem.
Saudi Arabia has launched 80+ sustainability initiatives such as afforestation, biodiversity protection, emissions reduction and new protected areas.
